Do Canadians need a visa to visit Egypt?

Yes, Canadian tourists need a visa in order to visit Egypt. They must also be in possesion of a valid passport with at least 6 months validity remaining, and at least one blank page for their visa. Canadians can apply for their Egypt tourist visas at an Egyptian embassy or consulate in Canada before they travel to Egypt. They can also apply online for an Egypt e-Visa, or they can get a visa-on-arrival when they land at the airport in Cairo.

A visa-on-arrival is a single entry visa that allows you to stay in Egypt for up to 30 days. In you plan on staying in the country for more than 30 days, you will need to apply for your visa before you travel to Egypt.

How do I apply for an Egypt e-Visa?

The Egyptian e-Visa process has been completely digitalized which means that you will not have to mail any documents. You simply create an account on the Egypt e-Visa Portal site; complete the application form; scan and send the required copies and photos, and submit payment. Is Egypt safe for Canadian tourists?

Yes, Egypt is as safe for Canadian tourists as it is for any other tourists. Foreign tourists very rarely become victims of serious crime. Unfortunately, some visitors do get affected by petty crime such as pick-pocketing and/or scams. For this reason, it is always best to remain alert and aware of your surroundings, particularly in very busy and/or very touristy areas, including crowded tourist attractions.

Having a professional tour guide with you can greatly reduce the risk of being scammed or overcharged for goods or services.

Although Egypt does not have any laws banning homosexuality, discretion is advised for LGBT tourists. There have been a few high profile cases in Egypt in which people from the LGBT community have been convicted under other laws and then handed down long prison sentences. While most Egyptians are very tolerant, Egyptian society is still very conservative by Western standards.

It is worth noting that it is quite common to see Egyptian men holding hands in public. This is a part of Egyptian culture and it should not be interpreted as a sign of homosexuality or as a sign of acceptance thereof.

Is Egypt safe for female travers?

Yes, Egypt is safe for female travelers, including women who may be traveling alone. However, female travelers, and especially those visiting Egypt on their own should avoid being out on for at night in very quiet and/or dimly lit areas. It is also a good idea to not wear very revealing clothes. Contrary to what some people believe, female tourists will not be arrested for wearing very short pants or short mini skirts, but they may attract comments and unwanted stares.

Is it safe to take my medication with me when I visit Egypt?

Yes, not only is it safe to take your medication with you, but it is also recommended. However, if you take prescription medication and you are concerned about Egyptian Customs or Immigration checks, then you may want to ask your healthcare professional for a cover letter explaining what medication you are taking and in what doses. Under no circumstances should you bring prescription drugs into Egypt for someone other than yourself.

Do I need any vacinations to visit Egypt?

The Egyptian government does not require Canadians who are traveling from Canada to Egypt to have any particular vacinations prior to visiting the country. However, your own healthcare provider in Canada may recommend that you get vacinated against certain illnesses such as rabies for example. This is a personal choice and one which is best discussed with your doctor in Canada.
