Everyone knows that Egypt is home to the famous Giza Pyramids, the Great Sphinx, numerous beautiful temples, and ancient tombs.

Of course if you are only going to be visiting for a week or two you simply won’t have enough time to be able to visit all of the country’s breathtaking archaeological sites. So, which tourist attractions should be at the top of your bucket list of must-see attractions?

Your personal travel style and your budget may of course influence your decisions regarding which places to visit during your stay in the country. Fortunately even on a relatively tight budget there is an awful lot of places which you can visit during your trip to this fascinating country.

Cairo is not exactly one of the world’s most beautiful cities but it is certainly a fascinating city with so much to see and do. Naturally if you are only going to have a limited amount of time Cairo, you won’t be able to visit all of the city’s attractions. If at all possible, we recommend that you devote one of two full days to sightseeing in and around Cairo. Below are what we believe to be the best places to visit in and around Egypt’s bustling capital city: 

The Giza Necropolis

The Giza Necropolis is one of the world’s most famous and most visited historical sites, thanks to the fact that it is home to the legendary Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx. Entrance tickets for the necropolis at Giza, Egypt’s second largest city also give you access to the valley temple which is located on the same site.

The Pyramids of Giza were built to serve as tombs for Pharaoh Khafre, Pharaoh Khufu, and Pharaoh Menkaura. Visitors can enter all three of the pyramids but in order to do so a separate ticket must be purchased at the site for each pyramid you wish to enter. An admission ticket for the largest of the three pyramids (the Great Pyramid) costs slightly more than admission tickets for the other two pyramids.

Quite frankly, if you really want to see inside one of the pyramids, we would recommend purchasing one of the cheaper tickets. All three of the pyramids were looted in antiquity, and there really isn’t much to see inside any of them other than empty chambers, passageways and lots of stairs. Still, the Giza necropolis is one of the best places to visit in Egypt.

NOTE: Do not attempt to climb any of the pyramids because at best you will receive a steep fine, or in a worst case scenario you could find yourself in prison.

The Egyptian Museum

The Egyptian Museum is conveniently located in the heart of Cairo, directly across the road from Tahrir Square. It is one of the world’s most renowned museums dedicated to ancient Egyptian antiquities. With a vast collection of over 120,000 artifacts, the museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history and civilization of ancient Egypt. Visitors can explore a wide range of exhibits, including statues, jewelry, and daily life objects from various periods of Egyptian history. Unfortunately, the treasures of Tutankhamun and the country’s royal mummies were recently moved to the new Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza, which is now the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilization. If you have sufficient time to spare you could of course visit both of these fantastic museums since both museums are among the best places to visit in Egypt. 

If you do decide to visit both museums you should be aware of the fact that the new Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza has a smart casual dress code in place.

Khan El Khalili Bazaar

The Khan El Khalili Bazaar is a famous marketplace located in a part of Cairo known as Islamic Cairo. It is one of the oldest bazaars in the country, dating back to the 14th century. The bazaar is known for its vibrant and lively atmosphere, with narrow winding streets filled with shops and stalls selling a wide range of goods, including jewelry, textiles, spices, and souvenirs. It is a popular tourist attraction, offering visitors a glimpse into traditional Egyptian market culture.

The Great Step Pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser

The Great Step Pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser is one of the most iconic and significant architectural structures of ancient Egypt. Built during the 27th century BCE in Saqqara, this pyramid marked the birth of pyramid building. Designed by the architect Imhotep, it served as the burial monument for Pharaoh Djoser and was the first large-scale cut-stone construction in Egypt. This pyramid is characterized by its unique step-like structure, consisting of six rectangular mastabas (tombs) stacked on top of each other.

Standing at approximately 60 feet tall, the Colossi of Memnon have witnessed centuries of history and continue to amaze visitors with their impressive size and craftsmanship.
